A fun DIY activity for kids to create a stunning raised salt watercolor galaxy, fostering creativity and learning.

Ingredients

  • Waterproof cardstock or thick cardboard
  • Table salt
  • Liquid watercolors or food coloring
  • Water
  • Glue
  • Brushes
  • Small cups or dishes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Base: Start by laying out your waterproof cardstock or cardboard on a flat surface. This will be your canvas for the galaxy.
  2. Draw the Design: Using a pencil, lightly sketch your galaxy design. Kids can create swirling shapes, stars, or abstract patterns.
  3. Apply Glue: Carefully apply glue along your drawn lines. Make sure to cover the entire line where you want the salt to stick.
  4. Sprinkle Salt: Generously sprinkle salt over the glue while it’s still wet. Make sure to cover all glued areas, and shake off the excess salt.
  5. Let It Dry: Allow the glued salt to dry completely. This usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
  6. Prepare Watercolors: In small cups, combine water with the liquid watercolors or food coloring. Mix until you achieve the desired intensity.
  7. Start Painting: Using a brush, start painting over the salt. The colors will spread and blend beautifully, creating a galaxy effect.
  8. Add Effects: For added detail, kids can use a clean, wet brush to blend colors further or create stars by flicking white paint onto the galaxy.
  9. Final Touches: After the painting is complete, leave the artwork to dry fully, ensuring all the colors are set and vivid.
  10. Display Your Creation: Once dry, hang or display your children’s masterpieces for everyone to admire.

Notes

Keep some paper towels handy for any spills and allow for flexibility in the level of assistance children might need.
