Transform a simple plastic bottle into a vibrant patriotic wind chime that’s perfect for outdoor decor, engaging kids in a fun and creative crafting session.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 clean plastic bottle (common household item)
  • Red, white, and blue beads (easy to find, especially around holidays)
  • 5 small bells (optional but adds wonderful sound)
  • Fishing line (budget-friendly and durable)
  • Acrylic paint (look for washable options for easy cleanup)

Instructions

  1. Cut and paint the bottle top as a canopy: Start by cutting the plastic bottle in half. Use the top half as your canopy for the wind chime. Encourage kids to paint it in vibrant colors, focusing on red, white, and blue. Let it dry completely before moving on.
  2. String beads and bells on five lines: While the canopy dries, cut five lengths of fishing line, each about 18 inches long. String beads and a bell on each line, creating patterns they like.
  3. Knot them through holes around the rim: Make holes around the bottom rim of the painted canopy and knot each fishing line through these holes, spacing them evenly.
  4. Add a hanging loop: Take a longer piece of fishing line, knot it at the top, and attach it to the canopy’s point for hanging.

Notes

This project is suitable for kids aged six and up, with supervision for younger kids. Be creative with patterns and colors for the beads.
