A fun and creative project for kids to make decorated eggs that glow under black light using simple materials.

Ingredients

  • Empty eggshells (blown out or carefully emptied)
  • Tonic water or diluted highlighter ink solution
  • Small black light or UV flashlight
  • Cotton swabs and fine paintbrushes
  • Paper towels
  • Shallow tray
  • Small needle or pin
  • Skewer
  • Warm soapy water
  • Clear acrylic spray or diluted PVA glue (optional)
  • Gloves and apron (optional)
  • Small padded box or egg carton for storage

Instructions

  1. Prepare the eggshells by tapping a pin gently into the top and the bottom of the egg to create holes.
  2. Blow out the contents into a bowl, keeping the shells intact.
  3. Rinse the empty shells thoroughly with warm, soapy water and set them upright to dry.
  4. Coat the inside lightly with diluted PVA glue or clear acrylic spray and let it dry.
  5. Lay a soft towel on a table and arrange your empty shells on it for decorating.
  6. Pour tonic water into a shallow dish or dilute the highlighter ink solution as desired.
  7. Check the glow by testing the mixture on a scrap piece of paper.
  8. Practice writing small shapes on scrap paper before painting the shells.
  9. Create designs by dipping a fine brush or cotton swab into the glowing solution and painting on the shells.
  10. Let the painted ink dry fully before handling the shells again.
  11. Turn on your black light in a dim room to reveal the glowing magic of the decorated eggs.
  12. Seal the outer surface with clear acrylic spray if desired for durability.
  13. Store your completed glowing eggs in a padded display or egg carton.
