A creative project combining art and science to make colorful butterflies using coffee filters and markers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 white paper coffee filters
  • 1 pack of washable markers in bright colors
  • 1 cup of tap water
  • 1 small plastic eye dropper
  • 4 wooden clothespins
  • 2 chenille pipe cleaners (cut in half)

Instructions

  1. Start by using colorful markers to draw thick circles or playful patterns on each coffee filter.
  2. Take your eye dropper and add 5 to 10 drops of water right in the center of your designs, watching the colors spread.
  3. Once the filters are wet, lay them flat on a protected surface to dry completely.
  4. When they are dry, gather the center of each filter to form the wings and secure them with a wooden clothespin.
  5. Finish by wrapping half of a pipe cleaner around the top of the wings for antennae.

Notes

Store your butterflies in a cool, dry place to preserve their beauty. They can also be reused for different activities.
