A fun and colorful DIY project that teaches kids about crystallization using simple household materials.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup water
  • String or fishing line
  • Pencil or stick for hanging
  • Colorful dye (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 cup of water until it is almost boiling.
  2. Stir in 1 cup of baking soda until fully dissolved.
  3. Add a few drops of dye if desired.
  4. Pour the solution into a shallow bowl or dish.
  5. Tie a piece of string to a pencil or stick and suspend it in the solution.
  6. Allow the mixture to sit for several hours or overnight.
  7. Remove the string once the desired crystal growth is achieved and let it dry.

Notes

Keep the bowl undisturbed while the crystals grow. Use various dyes for different colors.
